Have been going around town trying to find the best places to eat. The prices are great. 3 people can eat a lot of food for 7.50 dinars. About 10 dollars or so. Have been watching the students on campus. Most of the women wear head scarves (hijab). Some of them wear long dresses that button up the front (and look like they would be really hot), others wear jeans and shirts. There are a few that wear the complete berka (?) and even wear gloves. There are some girls that do not wear the head covering and they wear very western style clothing. The guys tend to wear jeans/slacks and t-shirts. The Elvis look seems to be in (with the slick back hair and everything). Someone forgot to tell the guys that parachute pants went out of style in the 80's though.
Everyone has been very nice and helpful. We do get some pretty strange looks. Luckily we are not the only Americans here. There are some from Virginia that come each summer to study Arabic. We went to the archaeological dept at the school and looked around. They have a great museum. I think they have a nursing school. I would like to go and see what that is all about.
They are planning a big celebration on Thursday to celebrate their independence day so maybe there will be some cool stuff going on.
Students decorated the campus with flags. This is the "eternal flame" resting in a fist symbolizing independence and that they intend to maintain it.
This is the library. Very cool!
We go into the field tomorrow at 7 am. It is still cold in the am, then gets to the 80's. It is pretty hot if you are standing in the sun. Right now it is about 70 degrees with a cool breeze. Not bad! Tomorrow we get the tombs assigned to us and get started. We will see how that goes.
